Ginger Cake

2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
Dash ground cloves
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2/3 cup molasses
1 egg, beaten
3/4 cup boiling water
Whipped topping

Combine flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, salt and cloves; set aside. In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and shortening. Add molasses and eggs; mix well. Stir in the dry ingredients alternately with water; mix well.

Pour into a greased 9-in. square baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Cool completely. Cut into squares; top with a dollop of whipped topping. Leftovers will keep several days in an airtight container. Makes 9 servings
